Most people believe that the FDIC will protect their deposits if the bank they use is the next one the FDIC has to shut down. Such a comforting thought -- until you examine how the FDIC gets the money to back deposits.

I recently came across the following headline in the mainstream blogosphere: "Wall Street Falls Back In Love With IPO's." The attached article also contained this juicy tidbit: "The fundamental driver of an IPO is the business prospects of a company." Not so. The stock offerings of late are not being driven by healthy growth prospects and soaring bottom lines.

So far in 2010, the number of US bank failures has reached 25, a rate of two per week. This compares to 25 total bank failures for ALL of 2008, and three for 2007. Yet -- no matter how grave the data gets, few people imagine the corporate banking crisis trickling down to average Joe or Jane and their lollipop-dispensing drive-through bank tellers.

Since the very start of the financial crisis, the talking heads have glided down a slope of unwavering hope. At so many fleeting lows, they called the absolute "end" to the rout -- only to watch in horror as banking shares were battered even further. Last week saw another nauseating milestone in the ongoing economic crisis. The price for one share of Citigroup is now the same as a McChicken sandwich: A buck and some change. For many, it's the ultimate wake-up call. But what about hearing said "call" before the ALARM bells went off?

In the U.S, they have become as ubiquitous as hotdog street vendors, or a McDonald's at every highway exit – lawyer ads on the back of the phone book. In the age of Blackberries, phone books aren’t what they used to be, and those back-cover ads are unbelievably expensive. Yet, with the lawsuit now pending by the state of New York against Swiss bank UBS AG, those phone book lawyer guys are likely to get a whole lot busier...

Many people think the Fed has “saved” Fannie and Freddie, and the FDIC will “save” all depositors from the effects of the mortgage and credit crisis in the United States. Most people hope the crisis is just another temporary interruption in the “normal” bull market, and a return to the status quo is just around the corner.
