On January 24, the long-awaited 2012 Academy Awards nominations were unveiled to the public... minus ONE very important selection, in our opinion: "The Best BIG Picture for the Larger Trend in Commodities." For that category, may we "nominate" EWI's brand-new, January 2012 Monthly Futures Junctures special, 19-minute VIDEO issue. For the first time ever...

Grains: Has the Trend Changed?
EWI's Daily Futures Junctures reveals whether the moves up in soybeans, wheat, and corn will last
By Nico Isaac

The commodity grain complex has endured more recent setbacks than the Herman Cain campaign. In September alone, Soybean prices plunged 20% in the biggest rout in three years, while the 23% fall in corn prices was the steepest since at least 1959. But on November 21, the grain pain turned to gains when soybeans, corn, and wheat enjoyed a synchronized surge to one-week highs. So the million dollar question is: Will the northward trend continue?

As the harvest season of Indian corn husk-centerpieces draws near, it's the perfect time to look back at a time when corn prices were the centerpiece of the commodity table. That wasn't that long ago; think: two months. In August to early September, corn prices were enjoying a spectacular rally to new contract highs. And according to the mainstream experts, alls well that ends... "yellow."

May-June is not summer, nor is it spring. It's the unofficial "fifth" season, known to many as "Wedding" season. And, after months of will-she, won't-she speculation, the date has finally been set: The commodity sector will walk down the aisle to meet her long-awaited groom. The question is -- Will he take the diamond ring out of his nose (i.e., Bull) or from his paw (i.e., Bear)?

On Thursday, May 5, the Reuters-Jefferies CRB Index of commodities plummeted 5% in its fifth steepest one-day decline ever. The next day, the final damage was tallied: In five days, everything from copper to cocoa, soybeans to silver, turned down in a gut-wrenching rout that slashed $99 billion off the commodity markets' value. Was it all just a bad dream?

Over the last few months, tracking soybean futures has been about as exciting as watching bread mold. Since peaking in early February, bean prices have been locked in a sideways trend with no sustained breakouts above or below the $14-$13 per bushel range. But things weren't always so lukewarm. Back in late 2010, in fact, soybean prices were downright sizzling. To wit: From their June 2010 low, bean prices had soared 30% before cooling off at a two-year high in early November.

In lieu of the fact that April is national "Financial Literacy" month, I thought I'd talk about the experience of learning to "read" the language of market trends. All first-year students in the school mainstream economic wisdom are assigned the task of memorizing one single book from cover to cover -- called "Fun with Fundamentals." The basic story goes like this:

Over the last month, several of the biggest "supernovas" in the commodity universe have turned into falling meteors. To wit: From their respective February peaks, the alleged "grain king" wheat has plunged 20%-plus while the food forerunner sugar has soured to a near four-month low. And according to a late February 2011 Bloomberg report, the biggest of the big commodity investors have had their hats handed to them, big time. The column reads:

Last week, the corn market seemed to have stepped in a puddle of radioactive green goop, going from no-bulk to the Incredible (grain) Hulk. On March 31, corn prices rocketed from a three-month low to a three-YEAR high. As for why -- well, according to the mainstream experts, said "green goop" came in the form of the bullish March 31 US Department of Agriculture report on planting intentions and surplus stock supply. Here, the following news item digs up the details:

Lately, the financial media has followed around the commodities sector like paparazzi pursues celebrities, tweeting: "OMG! Sugar soars to 30-year high," and "Grain Prices Busted: Corn caught with other crop supply!" In fact, paparazzis do have something in common with the mainstream financial observers: They also focus on the "external" factors. Elliott wave analysis, on the other hand, doesn't look at the externals.

On the morning of Tuesday, February 2, millions of people tuned in to see whether that famous underground dweller would poke its head out from below the soil and see its shadow -- and no, I'm not referring to the furry groundhog Punxsutawney Phil. I'm talking about GRAIN-hog Day, when commodity traders all over watched in baited breath to see if the wheat market saw its bearish "shadow" -- OR the onset of an early bullish "spring."
